Stranger Things is one of the summer’s most anticipated T.V. shows, and with good reason. It has a retro80s feel that’s hard to resist, and it’s loaded with some fantastic nods to pop culture. But where is Stranger Things filmed? If you were wondering, the show was shot in Hawkins, Indiana.
So if you’re ever feeling nostalgic for the display or want to check out the setting, be sure to head over to Hawkins, Indiana!
Located in Hawkins, Indiana – the small town that served as the setting for Netflix’s hit series Stranger Things – the exterior of the Hawkins Middle School was used in the show. The school features prominently in many episodes and is where much of the action takes place. I
n addition to serving as a location for filming, Hawkins also doubled for other small towns in Indiana and Illinois.
The University of Southern California
The University of Southern California is home to many of Stranger Things’ most iconic locations. Some scenes were filmed at local businesses and landmarks, while others were shot on USC’s campus.
Here are five places you might have seen in the hit Netflix series:
The Winnebago Company Warehouse – This former manufacturing plant houses the show’s fictional Hawkins National Laboratory.
University Library – The library doubled for the fictional Hawkins Middle School in season one and was used for flashbacks in season two.
El Segundo Boulevard Bridge – The bridge was used as a location for the town of Hawkins, Indiana, and featured in several scenes throughout the series.
Lark Creek Road – One of Season One’s most memorable scenes occurred at this country road where Eleven saved Mike from being captured by the government.
Tamarisk Grove – The final scene of Season Two saw Eleven escape from Hawkins into this forest, which served as an homage to Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.
In the early 1980s, a small town in Indiana was chosen as the backdrop for one of the most popular and beloved television shows of all time – Stranger Things. The series was filmed primarily in Winona, with some scenes shot nearby Hastings. The show’s creators originally wanted to film in Duluth but were vetoed by the city officials there.
While much has changed since then – including the closure of many small businesses in Winona that were used as set locations – some aspects of the town have remained virtually unchanged. One such spot is Kilwin’s Pharmacy, which served as Winona’s iconic drug store throughout seasons one and two of Stranger Things.
The pharmacy is closed, but it still stands proudly on Main Street as one of Winona’s most recognizable landmarks. It’s also been used for other filming projects, including an appearance in season three of Vikings and a recent commercial for T-Mobile.
The Millinery Shop
The Millinery shop, where the girls in Stranger Things get their fashion fix, is precisely where the show was filmed. Milliners and hat makers who worked on the show shared photos of their workspaces and hats they made for the show on social media.
In addition to providing a look into how the cast dresses for Stranger Things, these posts also offer a behind-the-scenes glimpse at what goes into making a hit T.V. show. Hatmaker Patricia Green told The New York Times that she used 400 yards of woolen fabric to create Eleven’s iconic hoodie hat.
The Town of Byers
Byers is the town that Stranger Things is set in, and it’s a pretty small town! It’s located in the state of Indiana, about an hour outside of Indianapolis. The main street in Byers is reminiscent of the ’80s, with its faded graffiti and neon signs.
The town only has around 100 people, so it feels like you’re exploring someone’s home when you walk around! Most of the filming occurred at the Byers Public Library, which doubles as the local school. Local businesses, such as the gas station and grocery store, were also used for filming.
The cast and crew welcomed visitors during filming, making great photos! If you’re ever in Byers when Stranger Things is airing, stop by the parade route and give them all a wave – they would love to hear from you!

Stranger Things is filmed in Atlanta, Georgia. The “UFO” scene was filmed at the Emory University Campus in Druid Hills.
The city of Los Angeles was chosen as the filming location for Stranger Things, a dark and atmospheric science fiction thriller. The show is set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, during the early 1980s.
The show’s producers spent two years scouting locations before selecting California as the ideal setting. They were attracted to the state’s diverse landscape and abundance of abandoned buildings and closed factories.
Most shootings occurred in Los Angeles County, with additional scenes shot in other parts of California, such as Santa Barbara and Sacramento. The show’s creators also visited locations in Ohio, Illinois, and New York City to study their retro-futuristic aesthetics.
Los Angeles has emerged as one of Hollywood’s most famous filming locations due to its wide range of scenery and weather conditions.
The city has been used to film numerous television shows and movies, including Blade Runner 2049, Mad Max: Fury Road, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, Jurassic World, and Mission: Impossible – Fallout.
